The city’s oldest neighborhood, compact Browne’s Addition is a vibrant area with tree-lined streets dotted with grand Victorian mansions and Craftsman homes. A cluster of trendy eateries includes Italian, Mexican and pizza spots, plus a pharmacy-turned-pub. The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture features displays on regional history, art and culture, while Coeur d’Alene Park has a splash pad and playground.
Audubon-Downriver is nestled along the Spokane River bluff and known for Audubon Park, with 27 acres of pine trees, splash pads, playgrounds, basketball courts and ball field. The majority of homes can be described as English Cottage style, the motif of red brick gives the neighborhood a distinct flare that sets it apart from the surrounding areas. Most residents find themselves enjoying pizza at The Flying Goat or coffee at Little Garden Cafe.
The Garland District is a laid-back, artsy neighborhood centered on Garland Avenue, an old-school street with vibrant murals and galleries, trendy bars, and 1950s diners, including one shaped like a milk bottle. Lively Downtown Spokane, also known as Riverside, is a walkable area packed with laid-back eateries, hip pubs and clubs, and a mix of chain stores and indie boutiques. Restored buildings include the 1914 Historic Davenport Hotel and the art deco Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, home of the Spokane Symphony. Bisected by the Spokane River gorge, Riverfront Park has a carousel and a cable ride over Spokane Falls.
A quiet, residential neighborhood, Manito is known for its expansive namesake park, where paths wind among Japanese and lilac gardens, a conservatory, and playgrounds. The Olmsted Brothers-designed Cannon Hill Park has grassy areas and a duck pond. Charming Victorian homes and Craftsman bungalows line the district’s leafy streets, and snug corner cafes and bakeries serve pastries, bagels, and ice cream.
Mostly known for the beautiful, winding road of Rockwood boulevard, lined with deciduous trees and enchanting vibes. The neighborhood is close to downtown and a major bicycle route on Southeast Boulevard that help serve transportation needs. Rockwood retains a sense of grandeur and distinctiveness within Spokane. Grant Park has a playground, tennis courts, and a community garden.
Kendall Yards is a modern neighborhood in a former rail yard, with panoramic river views and hip spots for brunch, cocktails, and pizza. An art walk on and around the paved Centennial Trail takes in striking murals and sculptures, while Olmsted Brothers Green has a play area and picnic shelter. In summer, the Kendall Yards Night Market features live music, food trucks, and stalls selling produce and gourmet snacks.
The Cliff Cannon Neighborhood is a charming, urban neighborhood lined with historic homes and buildings. It climbs up the west end of the South Hill from downtown Spokane. There are four parks, three major hospitals and three small neighborhood business centers, including an urban forest with a tree canopy keeping the air clean.
Just west of downtown Spokane lies Latah Valley, an area that can barely be described as one single place. The region stretches from newer upscale developments and the sprawling campus of Spokane Falls Community College into the open farmlands of southern Spokane County. Within its boundaries lie quaint urban farming communities, creek-side parks and a golfer’s paradise. Latah Creek springs from the Spokane River and meanders for miles through remote communities.
Northwest Spokane offers a taste of simplicity tucked between turn of the century homes, sweeping parks and towering pine trees.
